Helping others was Laura Schilling’s ultimate goal when deciding on a career. After consulting with a trusted professor, Schilling, wealth manager/founder of Financial Innovations LLC, and estate planning attorney at Laura K Schilling, Esq, CPA, CSA Estate Innovations LLC, knew that the intersection between law and wealth management ticked all the boxes she was looking for.
As a single mother who has combined her talents with her estate law practice and her wealth management firm, Schilling believes her uniqueness and determination are highly relatable to her client base. This ability to connect with her clients on a deep interpersonal level is Schilling’s calling card. “I genuinely care about each of our clients. My strongest qualities are my empathy, honesty, and overall desire to take care of our clients.” Her prioritization of connection is demonstrated by her office layout, a small yet impactful detail. “Our office feels more like a home,” she explains. “This is on purpose. My approach has always been to make people feel comfortable and treat them the way I would want to be treated if I hired someone in my role.” Frequent touchpoints are another differentiator for Schilling. She reaches out to her clients during key moments in their lives – including surgeries, the birth of a child or grandchild, and birthdays – through newsletters and personal emails. “We strive for excellent customer service and try to go above and beyond,” she notes. “We handle this as a team with prompt returned phone calls and emails. We also make sure that we make notes about the client's important dates and things happening in their lives.” This personal touch – along with her technical expertise – has enabled Schilling to create a client referral cycle that supports scalable growth. Having recently achieved $500 million in AUM, Schilling is now looking to break the $550-million mark. “We have an excellent reputation, and our clients are very kind in referring us,” she says. “Our AUM also grew due to the market and our investments. This was based on our research and investing. Our AUM is non-discretionary, so our clients are part of our AUM growth.” Incorporating a multigenerational approach to wealth management is another way Schilling is looking to achieve sustainable growth. “I feel my biggest achievement is knowing that many of my original clients are still clients, and I work with their siblings and children. I love that we become part of the family.”
She adds, “We anticipate continuing to focus on multiple generations. We want to continue meeting our clients’ children as they enter high school or college and build those relationships.”
