“My age is actually a strength. I assure clients that I’ll be there for decades to come, guiding them through each stage of their financial journey”
Michael Lee,

Throughout her career in the wealth management industry, financial advisor at EFS Advisors Rebecca Trethewey has blazed a path shaped by unexpected opportunities and a genuine passion for her profession.
Initially, a career in finance or even an office environment was never part of her plan, but through a series of fortuitous turns, she discovered her true calling – one that continues to motivate her every day.
Empathy stands out as Trethewey’s defining professional trait. Her natural ability to understand and connect with clients on a personal level sets her apart in the industry. Down-to-earth and approachable, she is known for her candour and genuine care, qualities that foster lasting relationships with both clients and colleagues.
Trethewey’s willingness to go above and beyond, coupled with her ability to relate to people as individuals rather than numbers, has been instrumental in building her reputation.
“I have always been a very empathetic person and my ability to read people provides an advantage in my career,” she says. “Being informational, approachable, and understanding is one of my best professional qualities.”
Balancing the demands of a thriving career with motherhood remains her greatest challenge. As a mother to young children, Trethewey notes the flexibility offered at EFS Advisors as a key factor in allowing her to thrive.
Trethewey’s youth and endless curiosity has led to tangible benefits, which she utilizes to continuously adapt in an ever-changing industry.
“Just like with many things, sometimes the longer you do something, the more stuck you are in your ways,” she explains. “Being young and newer to this world gives me the ability to be innovative and question things others are not noticing. Also, financial planning and wealth management has traditionally held a level of status in many minds. I am a firm believer all individuals can benefit from support, regardless of their situation. Whether we like it or not, money is a part of all our lives, and we all carry mental stress because of it. I have found success in my career by validating the feelings of the individuals I serve and supporting them where they are.”
While other advisors may highlight financial metrics as their highest achievement, Trethewey revels in the fact that she is able to connect with people and provide meaningful guidance every day.
“The single biggest achievement of my career is the fact that I have found something I am excited to do every day, that brings me joy, which pushes me to continuously be the best that I can be,” she explains. “Not everyone can say that about their career choice and I am very blessed to be one who can. I have been recognized by various organizations and am very proud of those awards, but my drive to be better every day is the true achievement in my mind.”
Mentorship has also played a pivotal role in her journey. Guided by company president Kent Schutte, Trethewey has risen from an entry-level position to a respected advisor over the past decade. She values the real-world insights and humility that her mentor has imparted, striving to remain grounded and client-focused regardless of her achievements.
Now with valuable years under her belt, Trethewey is looking to inspire other young female advisors looking to make a name for themselves in the industry.
“I aim to continuing growing my client base, adding staff, and wish to mentor and support other women in this industry,” she says. “I would love to share all that I know to see others succeed with me.”

“It’s very important to set an example and to not only inspire but mentor other females,” she adds.
In addition to her sharp marketing eye, the key to Phillips Topping’s success lies in her high-energy approach and positive attitude.
“As the leader of a team, it’s important to motivate and encourage your team members. People work very hard and do their best and it’s important to recognize these efforts. For my career overall, my attitude has been one of curiosity. The more you can learn, the better you’ll understand the business, and then the deeper your knowledge will become, making you a better team member.”

With a focus on retirement planning, Lee is able to offer long-term planning solutions to clients nearing retirement.
“My age is actually a strength. Many advisors in the industry are close to retirement themselves, which can make clients nervous about starting a long-term relationship,” he notes.
“I assure clients that I’ll be there for decades to come, guiding them through each stage of their financial journey.”
To succeed in the leadership role he has undertaken at Farther, Lee was forced to learn management skills on the job, while remaining open to feedback from trusted peers around him.
Now with the chance to work as a mentor himself, he cherishes watching young advisors succeed. Leading Farther’s advisor boot camp, Lee highlights the accomplishments of two trainees who have gone on to be the top two producers at the firm.
“Watching others succeed and knowing I played a role in their growth has been a bigger achievement for me than any personal milestone,” he says.
The values learned in his first-generation immigrant household have deeply shaped Lee’s career. He often translated official documents for his family, a critical task that left no room for mistakes. Now, Lee approaches his clients with the same dedication and care.
“I approach every client and colleague with the care I would show my own family, and I think that genuine concern for their success has helped build trust and my reputation.”
